Kaduna State authorities have confirmed the release of 82 Christian worshippers who were abducted during an armed raid on churches in Kurmin Wali village, Kajuru Local Government Area on January 18, 2026.
Governor Uba Sani disclosed the development on Thursday during a visit to the Kaduna State Women and Children Shelter, where the freed victims are receiving medical attention and psychosocial support following their ordeal.
AFRIPOST had reported that the mass kidnapping occurred when gunmen stormed multiple church services, abducting 177 worshippers from the rural community.
Prior to this announcement, 11 captives had already regained freedom, and others reportedly escaped while being taken deeper into forest areas.
During his visit to the shelter, Governor Sani extended his condolences to the victims and their families, acknowledging the trauma they endured.
He reiterated his administration’s determination to secure the release of all remaining abductees, stressing that no effort would be spared to ensure the safety and reunification of those still in captivity.
“We are committed to working closely with security agencies to bring every one of the captives home safely,” the governor said, emphasising ongoing coordination with federal security bodies.
The Kaduna State Government has praised the swift response of security forces involved in tracking and negotiating for the victims’ release.
Authorities have also urged community members to remain vigilant and provide timely information to aid ongoing protection efforts and prevent future incidents.
Banditry and kidnappings have been persistent challenges in parts of Southern Kaduna, with previous incidents prompting local leaders and civil organisations to call for enhanced security measures and improved communication from government authorities.
