BREAKING: INEC finalises 2027 election timetable despite delay in Electoral Act passage

Must read

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it has completed preparations for the 2027 general election, even as the amended Electoral Act remains under consideration by the National Assembly.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during a meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), emphasising the commission’s readiness to conduct the polls as scheduled.

“While we have submitted our recommendations to the National Assembly, some items in the timetable could be affected depending on when the lawmakers pass the amended Electoral Act,” Amupitan said.

He added, however, that the commission would, for now, proceed based on the provisions of the current Electoral Act to ensure that preparations remain on track.

The commission has reportedly finalised the election timetable and schedule of activities, signalling its determination to maintain electoral timelines despite legislative delays.

Amupitan also reassured stakeholders that INEC remains committed to holding a credible and transparent election, noting that ongoing consultations with CSOs are part of efforts to strengthen electoral processes.
