Former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, has described the state’s 50th anniversary as a defining milestone that calls for sober reflection on its journey so far and a renewed commitment to building a more secure and prosperous future.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Media Adviser, Terver Akase, Ortom said since its creation in 1976, Benue State has evolved steadily, driven by the resilience of its people, the richness of its cultural heritage and its strategic role in national development, particularly in agriculture as the Food Basket of the Nation.
He noted that while the past five decades recorded progress, they were also marked by daunting challenges, stressing that the people of Benue consistently demonstrated perseverance, discipline and a deep attachment to their land, qualities he said have sustained the state through difficult times.
According to him, the journey of the state has not been without trials, including periods of insecurity, pain and loss, but the people showed uncommon courage and determination in defending their ancestral heritage and upholding the sanctity of human life.
“The story of Benue is therefore not only one of struggle, but of hope, resistance against injustice, and an unyielding quest for peace and progress,” Ortom said.
Reflecting on his tenure between 2015 and 2023, the former governor said his years in office reinforced his belief in leadership anchored on trust in God, protection of human life, the rule of law, fairness and equity.
He said he was honoured to have served a people whose love for their land and commitment to justice inspired decisions taken in defence of the collective future, adding that he remained grateful for the trust reposed in him despite the challenges faced.
Ortom said the golden jubilee presents an opportunity for all stakeholders, including government, traditional institutions, the private sector and civil society, to recommit to unity, responsible leadership and inclusive development.
He also urged the people to continually pray for those in authority to enable them succeed, while congratulating the government and people of Benue State at home and in the diaspora on the attainment of the 50th anniversary, calling on them to remain steadfast in the pursuit of peace, security and prosperity.
