Atiku’s former spokesperson joins 2027 Ogun gov race

Must read

A former spokesperson to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Mr Segun Sowunmi, has declared his intention to contest the Ogun State governorship election in 2027.

Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, made the declaration on Tuesday during an interactive session with supporters and journalists via Zoom.

The PDP stalwart attributed his decision to what he described as persistent development deficits confronting the gateway state.

He said his ambition was borne out of the urgent need to address critical challenges in security, education, healthcare and overall governance.

Sowunmi stated, “As a critical stakeholder who has always been there, I have continued to offer support, and at this critical time, I am coming forward with the best ideas for governance in our dear state.”

The governorship hopeful lamented the lack of policy continuity and sustained implementation of development programmes in Ogun State.

He particularly faulted successive administrations for failing to maximally exploit the economic advantages of the state’s strategic proximity to Lagos at multiple entry points.

Sowunmi said, “We need to design Ogun not to work for the person in Oke-Mosan, but to work for every person in the nooks and crannies of the state.

“It is a little bit disgusting that Ogun has been embarrassed in terms of interventions in hospitals. If we look at the infrastructure in the oldest government hospital located in Abeokuta, the Sacred Heart Hospital, there is no reason why Ogun should not be the healthcare capital of the South-West.”

While expressing concern over the lingering crises bedevilling the PDP, Sowunmi disclosed that he was closely monitoring developments across different political parties and would soon make a definitive decision on his platform.
