Wike-backed PDP faction announces date for national convention

Must read

The Peoples Democratic Party’s National Caretaker Committee, under the leadership of Abdulrahman Mohammed, has scheduled the party’s national convention for March 28 and 29 in the Federal Capital Territory.

This was disclosed in a statement released following the 105th sitting of the party’s National Executive Committee on Monday evening.

AFRIPOST reports that the communique was delivered by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, after the session held at the Abuja residence of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.

The document, jointly signed by Mohammed and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, outlined additional timelines for internal party elections, including ward and local government congresses scheduled for February, with state-level congresses to follow in March.

According to the statement, NEC has instructed the caretaker committee to work alongside the National Organising Secretary and other relevant party structures to publish comprehensive guidelines and procedures for conducting the congresses.

The committee has been charged with ensuring strict adherence to the party’s constitution, Electoral Act provisions, regulations set by the Independent National Electoral Commission, and existing court orders.

In a significant move, the party’s NEC unanimously endorsed all resolutions and decisions adopted during its 104th emergency session held on December 7, 2025.

The communique emphasized that “all actions taken pursuant to the 104th NEC resolutions remain binding, lawful and operative, having been executed in strict compliance with the PDP Constitution (as amended), the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act, and relevant judicial pronouncements.”

The NEC also acknowledged a Federal High Court ruling in Ibadan that validated the party’s current leadership structure and administrative framework, while directing INEC to acknowledge the legitimately constituted caretaker committee.

The executive committee resolved that all party structures, members and stakeholders must continue to operate in full compliance with existing court judgments and judicial orders.

The committee subsequently called on INEC and other relevant agencies to honor the court judgment in the interest of democratic principles and constitutional governance.

The communique reaffirmed the legitimacy and authority of the Mohammed-led committee, with Anyanwu serving as secretary.

The party emphasized that the caretaker committee remains the sole legitimate national administrative body, fully authorized to function as the National Working Committee until the national convention is conducted.
NEC also approved the tenure extension for the National Caretaker Working Committee and other affected caretaker bodies at state and zonal levels, pending the completion of the national convention and respective state and zonal congresses.

The committee has directed the caretaker leadership to immediately establish convention sub-committees and commence comprehensive logistical, administrative and consultative arrangements to guarantee a transparent, inclusive and credible convention.

The party appealed to stakeholders, supporters and members nationwide and in the diaspora to remain resolute, law-abiding and dedicated to the party’s founding principles.
