Must read

Controversial Nigerian rapper, Speed Darlington, has sparked reactions online following his controversial response to Nigeria’s loss at the 2026 Grammy Awards.

The rapper also known as ‘Akpi’ shared a video that mocked Nigerian music stars after they failed to win in competitive categories, despite multiple nominations.

AFRIPOST had reported that at the 2026 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, South African singer Tyla won the Best African Music Performance category, defeating Nigerian heavyweights Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid, Omah Lay, and Ayra Starr.

The outcome meant Nigeria walked away without a single competitive Grammy win, a result that disappointed fans who believe Afrobeats continues to be overlooked despite its global success.

Shortly after the awards, Speed Darlington posted a video recorded on the streets of New York City.

In the clip, he mocked Nigerian artists and suggested that Grammy success is tied to powerful industry connections rather than talent alone.

He said in part: “Oil Grammy o, oil Grammy. If you put am for nyash, you go win Grammy. Omo, you understand me? Long face…”

The video quickly spread across social media, drawing attention for its bold tone and sarcastic delivery.

While some users defended him, saying he was simply stating an uncomfortable truth in his usual comedic style. Others accused him of disrespecting Nigerian artists who have worked hard to elevate Afrobeats globally.
