BREAKING: NLC, TUC ask all FCT striking workers to resume work immediately

Must read

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have directed all striking workers in the Federal Capital Territory to return to their duty posts with immediate effect, signalling a temporary end to the industrial action that disrupted activities across FCT offices.

The directive followed an intensive reconciliation meeting between organised labour leaders and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, aimed at resolving grievances raised by workers under the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC).

According to a statement issued by the NLC and TUC on Tuesday, the discussions were exhaustive and addressed long-standing complaints submitted by affected workers. Union leaders said each issue was reviewed individually, with commitments secured from the FCT administration.

Moreover, organised labour confirmed that the minister gave firm assurances that engagement with workers’ unions would improve going forward.

Crucially, the unions disclosed that protections were secured for workers who participated in the strike.

They said there would be no form of punishment, intimidation, or victimisation linked to the industrial action.

Furthermore, all pending labour-related cases involving the dispute at the National Industrial Court are to be withdrawn immediately, a move the unions described as necessary to reset relations and lower tensions.

Based on these outcomes, JUAC members and all NLC and TUC affiliates working under the FCT administration were instructed to resume work without delay. Labour leaders stressed that compliance with the directive was essential to stabilise public services.

In the joint statement to affiliates, the unions urged workers to act in good faith and prioritise industrial harmony.

“This decision was taken in the broader interest of workers and the public,” one union leader said, adding that labour would continue to monitor the implementation of all agreements reached.

The development comes after days of disruption to government operations in the FCT, raising public concerns over service delivery and labour relations within the capital territory.
