Police operatives in Benue State have foiled a violent attack in Orokam, leaving four suspected bandits dead after a tense exchange of gunfire with police officers.
The incident unfolded during a routine stop-and-search operation carried out by the Operation Zenda Joint Task Force in Ogbadibo Local Government Area.
According to police sources, the team intercepted a vehicle whose occupants later turned hostile.
Police spokesperson Udeme Edet confirmed that the suspects attempted to overpower officers at a checkpoint.
She said the situation escalated when some of the occupants drew weapons and began shooting in an effort to escape arrest.
“Our operatives were compelled to respond in self-defence after coming under heavy fire,” Edet said.
“The officers acted with restraint and professionalism, and the threat was neutralised.”
Moreover, the police said four armed suspects were killed during the confrontation, while another fled into nearby bushes.
A search of the scene led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, a loaded magazine, the suspects’ vehicle, and items believed to be protective charms.
Authorities disclosed that a manhunt has been launched to track down the fleeing suspect, while investigators continue to analyse the recovered items for possible links to other crimes in the area.
Reacting to the operation, Benue State Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, praised the officers involved, noting that their actions prevented what could have been a deadly attack on civilians.
“This outcome reflects our resolve to deny criminal elements any safe haven,” he said.
He further urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information, stressing that community support remains critical to sustained peace.
Meanwhile, security experts note that Orokam has remained on the radar of law enforcement.
In August 2025, a joint operation involving Benue and Enugu states led to the arrest of a suspected kidnap gang leader in the same community, highlighting ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks in the region.
