Suspected bandits have attacked Chibauna community in Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State, killing two residents and abducting more than 50 women.
The assault came barely weeks after reports of a peace deal between armed groups and communities in the area.
Residents said the attackers stormed the village in large numbers, firing shots indiscriminately and forcing villagers to flee in different directions.
During the raid, the assailants were also said to have made away with a significant number of livestock, including cattle and sheep.
Confirming the incident while speaking on BBC Hausa Service on Monday night, a local councillor, Malam Abdurasheed, said the gunmen invaded the community and created widespread panic.
He disclosed that two people lost their lives during the attack, while several others sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
According to him, although over 50 women were taken away by the bandits, some later escaped and found their way back to the community.
The councillor appealed to the military and other security agencies to urgently reinforce security in the area and ensure the rescue of those still being held.
The latest attack has renewed anxiety among residents, casting doubt on the effectiveness of the peace agreement and highlighting the persistent insecurity in parts of Katsina State.
