Kano governor Abba Yusuf returns to APC

Must read

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf is poised to formally rejoin the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, marking a significant realignment in the state’s political landscape.

The move follows Yusuf’s resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), alongside a large bloc of elected officials and grassroots leaders.

Those exiting the party include more than 20 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, several federal lawmakers, and all local government chairpersons across the state.

According to a statement released on Sunday by his spokesperson, Bature Tofa, the governor’s decision was shaped by a reassessment of his political trajectory and governance priorities.

Tofa said Yusuf concluded that returning to the APC offers a more stable and institutional framework for pursuing his development agenda.

Moreover, the spokesperson recalled that Yusuf’s ties with the APC date back over a decade.

He said the governor was an early member of the party in Kano and had actively participated in its internal processes before temporarily aligning with other political platforms.

“The governor believes the APC provides a familiar structure with clearer policy direction and national reach,” Tofa said.

“This, in his view, is essential for achieving tangible results for the people of Kano.”

Furthermore, Yusuf is said to be motivated by the prospect of closer cooperation with the federal government.

The administration expects that improved alignment will accelerate infrastructure projects, enhance security collaboration, and strengthen public service delivery across the state.

In addition, the governor reportedly views the defection as a step toward easing political tensions and fostering unity among Kano’s political actors.

“The objective is stability, not division,” Tofa said, adding that governance remains the central focus of the decision.

On Monday, Yusuf is expected to complete his APC registration in Kano in the company of state lawmakers, members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 local government chairpersons.

The event will also feature the official kickoff of the APC’s electronic membership registration exercise in the state.

Hence, the development signals a fresh chapter in Kano politics, with potential implications for party dynamics and governance ahead of future electoral contests.
