Residents of Ijebu Ode, Ogun State took to the streets on Friday in a calm but firm protest over claims that moves were underway to force a successor to the Awujale of Ijebuland on the people.
Carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, the protesters converged on Awujale Palace Road before marching toward the Ijebu Ode Local Government Secretariat to formally express their concerns.
Participants said the demonstration was aimed at defending long-standing customs surrounding the revered throne.
According to them, any attempt to sidestep established traditions could deepen divisions within Ijebuland.
One of the protest leaders said the people were not opposed to succession but insisted on transparency.
“What we are asking for is respect for our history and processes. The Awujale stool is too sacred to be handled in haste,” he said.
Moreover, protesters welcomed the Ogun State Government’s recent intervention, describing it as a timely step to prevent further tension.
They urged authorities to ensure that all stakeholders are carried along before any decision is taken.
Earlier in the week, the state government announced the suspension of the Awujale selection process after receiving multiple petitions from security agencies and concerned groups.
The decision was conveyed in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat.
However, community voices insist the pause should lead to wider consultations rather than a quiet resumption of the process.
“This protest is a reminder that the people must not be ignored,” another demonstrator said.
