The sudden death of a 27-year-old woman has taken a troubling turn after her boyfriend reportedly fled moments after she was confirmed dead.
The incident centres on Esther Akwaji, who allegedly collapsed while eating with her boyfriend at his residence in Dei-Dei, within the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.
Instead of remaining to assist police authorities, the man reportedly disappeared shortly after taking her to the hospital.
According to information available to investigators, Esther had travelled from Nasarawa State to Abuja to visit family members.
On January 21, she left her relatives’ home, saying she was heading to a bank, but later diverted to her boyfriend’s apartment.
Hours after she went missing, the family reportedly received a call from a man using Esther’s phone.
He identified himself as her boyfriend and explained that she had visited him and suddenly became unwell while they were eating.
“She started vomiting during the meal, and I rushed her to the hospital,” the man reportedly told the family, according to sources familiar with the call.
Medical personnel at Kubwa General Hospital confirmed that Esther was brought in dead.
Shortly after doctors made the pronouncement, the boyfriend allegedly fled the hospital premises and has remained unreachable since then.
Security sources said his identity is still being verified, while his disappearance has become a major focus of the ongoing investigation.
Confirming the development, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command said efforts were underway to locate and arrest the fleeing suspect as part of a broader probe into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
“The individual who brought her in left immediately after she was declared dead, and that action is central to our investigation,” the police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said.
“An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.”
As detectives intensify the search for the missing boyfriend, Esther’s body has been deposited for forensic examination, with authorities insisting that answers will only emerge once the suspect is found and medical findings are concluded.
