Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has officially withdrawn his membership from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing escalating internal disputes and the need to safeguard the broader interests of Kano residents.
In a resignation letter addressed to the NNPP Chairman of Diso–Chiranchi Ward in Gwale Local Government Area, the governor announced that his exit from the party would take effect from Sunday, January 25, 2026.
The letter was later confirmed through a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature.
Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation to the NNPP for the support he received during his political journey with the party, noting that he joined its ranks in 2022.
“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party, with effect from Sunday, 25 January 2026,” he stated in the letter.
He acknowledged the platform and support offered by the party, describing his time with the NNPP as a period of political growth and partnership with party members across the state.
However, the governor said persistent leadership disputes and ongoing court cases had eroded the party’s cohesion, leading to widening divisions among members.
“In recent times, the party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal processes, many of which are presently before the courts for judicial determination,” he said.
Governor Yusuf added that the divisions within the party had created a climate of uncertainty, both at the state and national levels.
“The growing disenfranchisement among party members has created deep divisions within the party structure, resulting in cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable and have generated uncertainty at both state and national levels,” he noted.
The governor said his resignation followed careful consideration and was motivated by what he described as the public interest.
“After careful reflection, and without prejudice to the party’s capacity to resolve its internal challenges, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” he stated.
He emphasised that his decision was made in good faith and without any bitterness, stressing his continued commitment to the unity and progress of Kano State.
The governor’s resignation has been joined by a significant number of elected officials, including 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight federal lawmakers, and 44 local government chairmen, who also announced their departure from the NNPP.
The party’s ward secretary in Diso–Chiranchi, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged receipt of the governor’s resignation letter.
He praised Governor Yusuf’s achievements in infrastructure, health, education, and economic empowerment, but admitted that the lingering party crisis made the resignation unavoidable.
“I wish to concur with His Excellency on the lingering crisis in our party. Though we are trying our best to contain it, we have no option than to accept the resignation of one of the most performing governors produced by the NNPP,” he said.
