BREAKING: 21 Kano assembly members, reps, LG chairmen dump NNPP

Must read

A sweeping political realignment has hit the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano, as 21 members of the State House of Assembly, eight federal lawmakers, and 44 local government chairmen simultaneously withdrew their membership, signalling a deepening rupture within the party’s structure.

The coordinated exit, according to the lawmakers and council chairmen, was driven by mounting internal disputes and uncertainty over the party’s future, which they said had begun to undermine cohesion, effective representation, and grassroots governance.

The mass resignation was formalised on Friday, January 23, 2026, in Kano State, following the decision of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to also resign from the NNPP.

The development was disclosed in an official statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

In a joint position, the defecting lawmakers said the persistent leadership crisis within the party had created irreconcilable divisions at both state and national levels.

One of the assembly members, who spoke on behalf of the group, said the situation had become “untenable for those genuinely committed to legislative stability and service delivery.”

“We reached this decision after wide consultations and careful reflection. The internal disagreements have continued to weaken trust and coordination within the party, making it increasingly difficult to function effectively,” the lawmaker said.

Similarly, the affected members of the House of Representatives said their decision was guided by the need to protect their constituencies from political instability.

“Our priority is the people we represent. Any platform that distracts from that responsibility requires reassessment,” one of the federal lawmakers noted.

At the local government level, the 44 chairmen said the crisis had filtered down to the grassroots, disrupting governance and development planning.

“The uncertainty within the party has affected coordination across councils, and we believe this step is necessary in the overall interest of our communities,” a council chairman said.

Meanwhile, the NNPP leadership at the ward level acknowledged receipt of the resignation letters, with Diso-Chiranchi Ward Secretary, Kabiru Zubairu, conceding that the party has been grappling with internal challenges.

He, however, commended the outgoing officials for their contributions to governance in Kano State.

The development marks one of the most significant political shake-ups in Kano’s recent history and raises fresh questions about the NNPP’s organisational stability ahead of future electoral contests.
