Confusion broke out on Wednesday at the Bende Local Government Council headquarters in Abia State after unknown persons allegedly dumped human faeces at the office complex of the council chairman.
The incident was confirmed by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the council chairman, Chimezie Princewill Okezie, who said the faeces were discovered around the block housing the office of the Executive Chairman, Uwabunkeonye Bassey.
Okezie described the act as disturbing and provocative, noting that the identity and motive of those responsible were yet to be ascertained.
He alleged that the development was a calculated attack by political opponents of the chairman, whom he accused of resorting to desperation after failing to counter the administration’s achievements.
According to him, the act was deliberately carried out to insult and desecrate a public institution, adding that it marked a shift from verbal attacks to what he termed a physical assault on the council.
Okezie said the incident was not only uncivilised but also an affront to the dignity of the local government, its staff and residents of Bende.
He assured members of the public that those behind the act would be identified and made to face appropriate consequences, stressing that the incident would not be swept under the carpet.
