Fela’s greatness does not diminish Wizkid – Charles Inojie

Must read

Popular Nigerian actor, Charles Inojie has reacted to the ongoing online dispute between singer Wizkid and musician Seun Kuti.

The exchange between Wizkid and Seun began after Seun criticised Wizkid’s fanbase, known as Wizkid FC, for comparing the global star to his late father, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo‑Kuti.

Seun said such comparisons are disrespectful to Fela’s legacy and influence, and repeatedly urged fans to “keep Fela’s name out of your mouths.”

Wizkid later responded on social media with a series of posts in which he directly addressed Seun and defended his position. In the messages, Wizkid described himself as “bigger than your papa” and used sharp language directed at Seun, deepening the online debate.

On Wednesday, Charles Inojie shared a lengthy comment on Instagram reflecting on the wider conversation about history, music, and legacy. In the post he wrote:

“It is not really surprising that we have found ourselves engage in such a base, ludicrous and intellectually skewed comparison as this. Nigeria is essentially a country that is afraid and perhaps ashamed of its own history or how else can one explain a situation where a country Willy‑nilly expunges to teaching of History from her educational curriculum?

“How difficult is it to understand that Fela’s greatness does not diminish who Whizkid is plus the much he can still become? … Music is timeless to start with. You don’t need to have lived with Bob Marley or Michael Jackson to accord them their rightful pride of place in the scheme of global music appreciation. … Honestly, it smacks of intellectual laziness of the worst kind for anybody to disparage the legacy of a musical deity like Fela … yet attempting a comparison is tantamount to a complete blasphemy!”

Charles’ comments emphasise that acknowledging Fela’s role in music history should not detract from recognising the achievements of current artistes like Wizkid.

The online clash has sparked strong reactions across social media, with fans and industry watchers debating questions about legacy, respect, and how to honour cultural pioneers while celebrating contemporary success.

As of now, neither Wizkid nor Seun Kuti has announced any plan to meet or resolve the issue publicly.
