Tension as pregnant woman delivers baby in captivity after husband’s killing

Must read

A pregnant woman abducted by gunmen in Kyaram community, Garga district of Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State, has reportedly given birth while being held captive, days after her husband was killed by the attackers.

The woman was said to have gone into premature labour after receiving information that her husband, Umar Rufa’i, was shot dead during the raid on their home.

The National Secretary of the Kanam Development Association, Shehu Kanam, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Jos on Monday.

According to him, the gunmen invaded the family’s residence in the early hours of Sunday, where they shot Rufa’i before abducting his pregnant wife and their daughter to an undisclosed location.

Kanam said relatives of the abducted woman were later contacted by the kidnappers, who informed them that she had delivered a baby while in captivity.

“We are deeply shocked by the killing of Umar Rufa’i at his residence in Kyaram community around midnight on January 17, 2026. His wife and daughter were also taken away by the attackers,” he said.

He added that Rufa’i was buried on Sunday in line with Islamic rites, noting that news of the woman’s delivery in captivity further compounded the family’s grief.

The KADA secretary lamented the worsening security situation in the Garga district, describing the area as one increasingly ravaged by banditry, killings and abductions.

He expressed concern that repeated appeals to authorities had not yielded results, urging the government and security agencies to take urgent steps to curb the rising wave of kidnappings and violence in the area.
