A 300-level Computer Science undergraduate of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL), Lapai, Niger State, has died by suicide, a development that has shaken students and staff across the institution.
The deceased, Kelvin Danlami, was a member of the university’s Computer Science department and was widely described by peers as quiet and focused on his studies.
However, information circulating within the university community suggests the student had been under intense emotional and financial strain prior to his death, a situation that reportedly worsened after funds meant for house rent were lost through gambling.
Reacting to the incident, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) expressed deep sorrow, describing the death as a painful and irreplaceable loss to the institution.
In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Aliyu Abubakar, the union said the tragedy had left students grieving and struggling to understand how pressures facing undergraduates could escalate unnoticed.
“This loss reminds us that many students suffer silently,” the statement said, urging members of the university community to look out for one another and seek help when overwhelmed.
Furthermore, the SUG extended condolences to the family of the deceased, his friends, and the Department of Computer Science, while praying for strength for all those affected.
Meanwhile, the incident has reignited conversations on campus about mental health challenges, gambling habits among students, and the urgent need for accessible counselling and support systems.
As of the time of filing this report, the management of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, had not released an official statement on the incident.
