Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has declared Monday a nationwide public holiday to celebrate the country’s victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The declaration followed Senegal’s hard-fought 1–0 win over hosts Morocco in Sunday’s final played in Rabat.
President Faye announced that the holiday would be observed with full pay for public sector workers to enable citizens to celebrate the achievement.
He said the day would also be used to give the national team a fitting welcome and commend them for their outstanding performance at the tournament.
The President further promised special rewards for the players and officials in recognition of their success on the continental stage.
Senegal secured the title after midfielder Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal in extra time, handing the Teranga Lions their second AFCON trophy in four years.
The final, held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, was marred by controversy after a late penalty was awarded to Morocco following a VAR review, leading to a brief walk-off by Senegalese players in protest.
Calm was later restored, and Morocco’s penalty was saved by goalkeeper Édouard Mendy before the match proceeded to extra time, where Gueye sealed Senegal’s victory.
Meanwhile, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation has announced plans to lodge a formal complaint with the Confederation of African Football and FIFA over the walk-off, as CAF confirmed it is reviewing the incident and possible disciplinary measures.
