A man, identified as Sule Gurmu, has been apprehended for allegedly murdering his wife, Umaima Maidawa, at Bayawa community in the Augie Local Government Area, Kebbi State.
Gurmu was arrested on Saturday, following a directive by the Chairman of Augie Local Government, Yahaya Augie, asking security agencies to ensure his immediate arrest.
The spokesperson for the Kebbi State Police Command, SP Bashir Usman, confirmed the arrest on Sunday, stating that the suspect will be arraigned in court in soon.
Gurmu allegedly killed his 25-year-old wife during a domestic dispute at their residence in Bayawa on Tuesday.
According to the report, Umaima was confirmed dead shortly after she was struck by her husband
with the wooden handle of a hoe.
The command disclosed that Gurmu fled Bayawa after the killing. He was, however, tracked down and apprehended on Saturday in Katami town, Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State in corporation with the Nigeria Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Augie, who had earlier visited the crime scene in Bayawa and supervised the transfer of the victim’s body to Argungu General Hospital for autopsy, described the killing as abhorrent and unacceptable.
He commended security personnel for their professionalism and extended condolences to the family of the deceased.
Residents of Bayawa have demanded for justice over this matter, calling on government’s intervention over constant domestic abuse in the community.
The chairman has, however, promised to safeguarding lives and property in Augie Local Government.
He also assured residents that Gurmu will face the full weight of the law.
