Protest rocks Ondo HealthTech College

Must read

Tension gripped the Ondo State College of Health Technology, Akure, on Monday as students took to the streets to protest what they described as extortion and decaying infrastructure.

The aggrieved students massed at the institution’s main entrance, shutting the gate and burning tyres while chanting protest songs, a development that disrupted lectures and other academic activities.

They insisted that academic work would remain suspended until the school authorities responded to their demands and addressed what they termed prolonged neglect.

Placards with different inscriptions were displayed as the protesters drew attention to the worsening condition of classrooms, hostels and laboratory facilities.

They also lamented the lack of a regular water supply, saying it had made life on campus increasingly difficult.

Some of the students accused the management of imposing unexplained charges on them despite the poor state of facilities.

According to the protesters, several complaints and petitions sent to the authorities were allegedly ignored, leaving them with no option but to stage the demonstration.

Efforts to get a reaction from the school management were unsuccessful as of the time this report was filed.
