Fresh details have surfaced on the decision by four members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to backtrack after initially pulling out of the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The lawmakers were said to have made the sudden reversal as part of efforts to secure firm political guarantees ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A source familiar with the development disclosed that the legislators are seeking clear assurances from the governor that they would be supported to return to the Assembly in the next election cycle.
According to the source, the impeachment move is not driven by allegations of gross misconduct against the governor, but by concerns over their political future.
The source explained that the lawmakers fear they may not secure tickets to contest again if the issue is not resolved in their favour.
He added that the crisis worsened after Governor Fubara defected to the All Progressives Congress in December, a move that altered the political calculations of his loyalists.
The source noted that while the governor is believed to have an assured ticket in the APC, the lawmakers insist on similar guarantees, warning that without such commitments, their political careers could be at risk.
