The ancient city of Kano is grappling with deep shock following the killing of a woman and three of her children in a quiet residential neighbourhood of the metropolis.
The incident occurred on Saturday in Dorayi Chiranci, an area on the outskirts of Kano city, where residents woke to the grim discovery within a family compound.
According to accounts from the community, the victims were attacked by unknown assailants who reportedly gained access to the home under circumstances that are still unclear.
A fourth child, an infant, was later found inside a well located within the same compound.
“This is something we have never experienced here. The entire street is traumatised,” a resident, who requested anonymity, said.
Moreover, locals said neither the motive nor the exact timing of the attack has been established, heightening anxiety across the neighbourhood.
Many residents said the silence surrounding the crime has intensified fear, especially among women and children.
Security operatives have since visited the area, while preliminary investigations are believed to be ongoing.
However, as of the time of filing this report, no arrests have been confirmed and the identities of those behind the attack remain unknown.
“The level of violence is alarming. Whoever did this must be found quickly to restore confidence,” another community member said.
Furthermore, residents are calling on the Kano State Government and security agencies to strengthen surveillance and patrols, warning that public trust could erode if decisive action is not taken.
There is also visible tension in Dorayi Chiranci, with families reportedly adopting extra safety measures and limiting movement, especially at night.
Efforts to obtain official comments were unsuccessful, as the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Police Command, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, could not be reached for clarification.
Meanwhile, the tragedy has renewed conversations around urban security in Kano, with civil society voices urging authorities to prioritise the protection of vulnerable households and prevent a recurrence of such violence.
