My son’s political choice personal, APC’s governance main issue — Atiku

Must read

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has publicly addressed his son’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), stressing that the move reflects a personal decision rather than a shift in his own political convictions.

In a statement shared on his verified X account late Thursday, Atiku clarified that his son, Abba Abubakar, acted independently in joining the ruling party, noting that such developments are not unusual in democratic settings where political choices and family ties occasionally intersect.

Moreover, Atiku emphasized his long-standing democratic principles, explaining that he does not compel his children to align with his political beliefs, just as he would not impose his will on Nigerians.

According to him, freedom of conscience remains central to any functioning democracy.

However, the former vice president redirected attention to what he described as more pressing national concerns.

He argued that the real issue lies not in individual defections, but in what he termed the APC’s record of poor governance and the deepening economic and social difficulties facing citizens under the party’s leadership.

Furthermore, Atiku reaffirmed his commitment to opposition politics, stating that he remains determined to collaborate with other “like-minded patriots” to challenge the current administration and present Nigerians with a viable alternative.

He added that his political focus remains on restoring good governance and advancing policies capable of delivering relief, renewed hope, and sustainable progress to the country, despite recent political realignments within his family.
