IED blast wounds five travellers in Zamfara

Must read

A quiet stretch of road in Zamfara State was thrown into panic on Thursday after a suspected improvised explosive device detonated beneath a moving motorcycle, leaving five people badly injured and prompting an immediate security response.

The explosion occurred when the motorcycle, which was conveying five passengers, reportedly drove over the device along the Takalafiya–Gadar Zaima Road.

The blast shattered the bike on the spot and injured all occupants, witnesses said.

Although no official statement had been issued as of press time, counter-insurgency analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the incident in a post on X, linking the suspected explosive to tactics commonly used by armed groups operating in the area.

“The pattern suggests the device was planted to target security patrols, but civilians unfortunately bore the impact,” a security source familiar with the situation said.

Following the explosion, security operatives swiftly sealed off the affected corridor and urged residents and commuters to steer clear of the route to allow for safety sweeps and risk assessment.

The injured victims were evacuated to the General Hospital in Gummi, where they are currently receiving medical attention.

Meanwhile, movement along the Takalafiya–Gadar Zaima axis remains restricted, as security agencies continue surveillance and clearance operations to prevent further threats and reassure local communities.
