Residents of Elebu in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State have said that the Oyo State Government, under Governor Seyi Makinde, is yet to reconstruct Elebu Road, contrary to claims circulating online.
The residents made this known on Wednesday during a visit by journalists to the area.
Our correspondent gathered that the road serves more than 50 communities and an estimated population of over 250,000 residents.
An online medium had earlier reported that the road had been reconstructed. However, residents who spoke to journalists dismissed the claim, insisting that no reconstruction has taken place as of the time of filing this report.
While appreciating Governor Makinde for promising that the road would be reconstructed, the residents stressed that the project has not yet commenced.
They disclosed that the Elebu Road, which links the Circular Road corridor, was recently graded through community efforts without government support.
It was also learnt that the road was originally constructed during the administration of former governor Abiola Ajimobi.
The residents lamented that repeated efforts to get the road reconstructed by the state government have so far been unsuccessful and appealed to Governor Makinde to fulfil his promise.
One of the residents, Engineer Adesokan Musa, said he was surprised by the online report claiming that the road had been reconstructed.
“I wish to state clearly that Elebu Road has not been reconstructed, contrary to what was reported by the online medium. It is unfortunate that some people can make such claims when nothing of that sort has happened.
“I see this as the handiwork of people who do not mean well for the communities served by this road. I appeal to the Oyo State Government, led by Engineer Seyi Makinde, to ensure that the road is reconstructed without further delay,” he said.
Another resident, Engineer Olanrewaju Yusuf, described the condition of the road as a major concern, especially during the rainy season.
“We spend a lot of money at mechanic workshops almost every week because of the poor state of the road. It is terrible.
“The governor has promised to fix the road, but we do not know what is causing the delay. As you can see, the road has only been graded through community efforts. We did this without government support, and we are appealing to the state government to come to our aid,” Yusuf added.
