Olubadan explains viral Alaafin handshake snub

Must read

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has dismissed claims that he deliberately ignored the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, during a recent public event in Ibadan, describing the controversy as a misunderstanding amplified online.

Speaking to journalists, the monarch said the incident has been exaggerated, especially across social media platforms, where a short video clip sparked speculation about tension between the two revered stools.

According to Oba Ladoja, his actions at the event were driven by logistics rather than disrespect.

He explained that he arrived late and was focused on reaching his seat quickly to avoid disrupting the ongoing programme.

“There was no intention whatsoever to snub anyone,” the Olubadan said.

“What people are reacting to was not deliberate. Unfortunately, it has been misread, particularly on social media.”

He further clarified that the seating arrangement required him to pass through different sections of the hall, adding that the movement may have created a wrong impression when viewed out of context.

“My seat was positioned between the Soun and the Alaafin,” he said.

“I had to move through some people, and by the time I turned back, other dignitaries had shifted. At no point did I decide to ignore or avoid anyone.”

Moreover, the traditional ruler faulted the viral clip for failing to capture the full sequence of events, insisting that he exchanged greetings with several dignitaries at the venue, including the state governor.

“If you watch the complete video, you will see that I greeted people,” Oba Ladoja said.

“Social media often highlights fragments and builds narratives around them.”

Addressing concerns about possible friction, the Olubadan revealed that both palaces have since communicated, stressing that there was no offence taken and no dispute brewing behind the scenes.

“I don’t see this as an insult to anybody,” he said. “There was no hostility, and there is no issue between us.”

Beyond the clarification, Oba Ladoja used the moment to urge calm and unity across Yorubaland, particularly among younger people, whom he encouraged to focus on values that promote collective progress.

“Our responsibility is to unite the present generation and those coming after us,” he said.

“We must raise standards, invest in education, and concentrate on what truly moves our society forward.”

The clarification follows the circulation of a video showing the Olubadan appearing to bypass a handshake from the Alaafin at the 2026 interfaith gathering held near the Oyo State House of Assembly, an episode that quickly ignited debate online.
