Woman dies after doctors allegedly leave scissors in her body during surgery

A tragic incident has left Kano residents in shock following the death of Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, after an alleged case of medical negligence at the government-owned Abubakar Imam Urology Centre.

A relative, Abubakar Mohammed, said Umar endured months of severe abdominal pain after a surgical procedure at the hospital four months ago.

He explained that the surgery, performed in September, was followed by persistent pain. Despite multiple visits to the hospital, she was reportedly given only painkillers, with no further investigations conducted.

Medical scans carried out just days ago revealed that a pair of scissors had allegedly been left inside her body during the initial operation. Plans were made for another surgery, but she passed away before it could take place.

Mohammed described the case as clear negligence and urged the Kano State Government and health regulatory authorities to investigate thoroughly, calling for justice for the deceased.

“How can medical professionals forget a pair of scissors inside a patient’s body? This is unacceptable and damages the integrity of the health sector,” he said.

In response, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board announced that it had launched an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the incident.

Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, the board’s Executive Secretary, assured that the inquiry would be transparent, impartial, and professional, stressing that the matter would not be ignored and that appropriate action would be taken if negligence is confirmed.
