Nasarawa SUBEB suspends top official over corruption allegations

Must read

The Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has placed a senior official on suspension following allegations of financial misconduct, signalling a renewed push to enforce accountability within the basic education system.

The action targets the Head of the Personnel Department at the Akun Development Education Authority, Theresa Amos, who was suspended by the board’s Executive Chairman, Dr Kassim Muhammad Kassim, to pave the way for an independent investigation.

According to the board, the suspension takes effect immediately and will last for two weeks.

During this period, the official is expected to step aside completely to ensure that investigators operate without interference.

Moreover, SUBEB directed that administrative control of the department be temporarily transferred to the most senior officer, a move officials say is meant to prevent disruptions to routine operations.

Speaking on the decision, Kassim said the board would not hesitate to act whenever integrity within the education sector is threatened.

“Our responsibility is to protect public trust and ensure that teachers are treated fairly at all stages of their service,” he said.

The allegations centre on claims that the suspended official demanded money from retired teachers before processing their entitlements.

In addition, she is accused of requesting payments from serving teachers as a condition for releasing promotion-related benefits.

However, the SUBEB chairman stressed that the suspension does not amount to a declaration of guilt.

He explained that the measure was purely administrative, designed to allow facts to be established without pressure or bias.

Furthermore, Kassim warned that any staff member found culpable after the probe would face appropriate sanctions.

“We are determined to clean up the system. Anyone who compromises transparency will be held accountable,” he said.

The development underscores Nasarawa SUBEB’s broader campaign against corruption, as the board insists it will continue to take firm steps to restore credibility and confidence in the state’s education administratio
