Troops foil sea pirate hijack, rescue 18 travellers in Cross River

Must read

In a bold and rapid operation, soldiers from the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade have freed 18 innocent travellers, among them two tiny infants, who fell victim to ruthless sea pirates on January 11, 2026.

The nightmare unfolded as the passenger boat journeyed from Nigeria toward Cameroon. Armed attackers in two high-speed boats and one wooden vessel struck without warning near the Kombo Fishing Port in Cameroonian waters.

Panic spread quickly, but a timely distress signal reached authorities.

Troops stationed at Ikang sprang into action without delay. They chased down the criminals, triggering a fierce shootout on the water.

Under intense pressure, one pirate speedboat overturned. The attackers panicked, deserted their captives, and escaped into the dense network of nearby creeks.

Miraculously, every single passenger emerged unharmed.

Brigadier General PO Alimikhena, Commander of 13 Brigade, hailed the soldiers’ quick thinking and bravery.

“Our dedicated men and women showed true heroism today,” he declared.

“Their swift professionalism turned a dangerous situation into a complete victory for safety on our vital waterways. We remain fully committed to crushing every threat in our area of operations.”

He stressed the power of teamwork beyond the uniform.

“Security is a shared responsibility,” General Alimikhena added.

“We urge residents of Cross River State and surrounding communities to share any useful tips. Your information can stop these criminals in their tracks and keep everyone safer.”

This rescue highlights the Nigerian Army’s growing success in patrolling and protecting busy cross-border waterways against piracy and kidnapping.

Authorities continue patrols to prevent any regrouping by fleeing suspects.

The incident serves as a reminder of ongoing risks in regional maritime routes, but also proof that decisive military response can protect lives effectively.
