Security operatives were on high alert around the Kano State Government House on Monday, following reports that Governor Abba Yusuf is planning to defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the All Progressives Congress.
A heavy deployment of security personnel was observed in and around the Government House, with officers positioned at major access routes and strategic locations leading to the seat of power.
The operatives, drawn from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, were seen manning checkpoints, while patrol teams monitored movement in the area.
Armoured Personnel Carriers and several police and DSS Hilux vehicles were also stationed within the vicinity, indicating heightened security measures.
Residents and civil servants around the Government House expressed concern over the unusual security build-up, which disrupted normal activities and movement in the area.
The development comes amid widespread speculation in the state over an alleged plan by Yusuf to dump the NNPP for the APC, a move that has continued to generate political tension.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State Government had yet to issue an official statement on the reason for the heavy security deployment or the defection rumours.
