A passenger aboard a Benue Links bus attacked by gunmen along the Otukpo axis in Benue State has described the harrowing experience, saying travellers thought they would not survive the assault.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening when the Lagos-bound vehicle, which had departed from Makurdi, was ambushed near the Burnt Bricks area, moments after leaving Otukpo town.
According to the survivor, the attack happened between two security checkpoints along the route.
“We were on our way to Lagos, around Otukpo axis, in between two checking points. We were attacked by armed robbers,” the passenger recounted.
The assailants opened fire continuously on the vehicle, creating panic among passengers.
“They kept shooting, shooting, shooting non-stop. They shot three people in the process,” the survivor stated.
The passenger described the atmosphere inside the bus as one of terror and confusion as bullets struck the vehicle.
“We thought we would die.
We thank God for life. I’m still in a shock stage right now, so I can’t say much,” the visibly shaken survivor added.
Three passengers sustained gunshot wounds during the attack, while others escaped without physical injuries.
The wounded victims were immediately conveyed to the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Otukpo, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
However, security agencies have yet to release an official statement on the incident at the time of this report.
