Fubara’s Impeachment: Process remains active – Rivers Assembly insists

Must read

The Rivers State House of Assembly has dismissed reports suggesting that the impeachment move against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, has been suspended, insisting that the process remains active.

The position of the House was contained in a statement issued on Friday and signed by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Hon. Enemi George.

According to the lawmakers, the impeachment procedure, which began on Thursday, is being pursued strictly in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

The Assembly explained that separate notices alleging gross misconduct have been served on both the governor and his deputy in accordance with Section 188 of the Constitution, noting that the documents were transmitted to them by the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, and that their responses are being awaited.

It added that the legislature was acting within its constitutional mandate to uphold the rule of law and check any form of abuse by public office holders, stressing that members of the House remained bound by duty to carry out such responsibilities.

The Assembly also faulted reports claiming that the impeachment process had been discontinued, accusing some individuals and media outlets of deliberately spreading misleading information to confuse the public.

Describing such claims as false and calculated, the House said it would not be distracted by intimidation, blackmail or threats, while urging residents of the state to ignore what it called attempts to undermine the process.

The statement concluded by appreciating Rivers residents for their support and prayers, while reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to democratic principles and constitutional governance.
