Trump orders US exit from 66 international organisations

Must read

President Donald Trump has ordered the United States to withdraw from 66 international organisations, marking one of the most extensive rollbacks of US engagement with multilateral institutions in recent history.

The directive was contained in a Fact Sheet released by the White House on January 7, 2026, which said Trump signed a Presidential Memorandum targeting organisations deemed inconsistent with American interests.

“Today, President Donald J. Trump signed a Presidential Memorandum directing the withdrawal of the United States from 66 international organisations that no longer serve American interests,” the White House said on its website.

Under the order, all executive departments and agencies are to end participation in and funding for 35 non-United Nations bodies and 31 UN entities, which the administration described as operating against US national interests, security, economic prosperity or sovereignty.

The White House said the decision followed a broad review of international organisations, conventions and treaties involving the US, with the aim of reassessing Washington’s global commitments.

“These withdrawals will end American taxpayer funding and involvement in entities that advance globalist agendas over U.S. priorities, or that address important issues inefficiently or ineffectively such that U.S. taxpayer dollars are best allocated in other ways,” the statement added.

Framing the move as a sovereignty-driven action, the administration accused several of the affected bodies of promoting policies that clash with US values and economic goals.

“Many of these bodies promote radical climate policies, global governance, and ideological programs that conflict with US sovereignty and economic strength,” the Fact Sheet stated.

It further argued that heavy US funding over the years had yielded little benefit.

“American taxpayers have spent billions on these organisations with little return, while they often criticise US policies, advance agendas contrary to our values, or waste taxpayer dollars by purporting to address important issues but not achieving any real results,” the administration said.

The decision builds on earlier withdrawals under Trump’s renewed presidency, including exits from the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Agreement, as well as actions against global tax coordination and UN agencies.

“Immediately upon returning to office, President Trump initiated the withdrawal of the United States from the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Agreement,” the White House noted.

The administration said the pullback would allow the government to redirect resources toward domestic priorities such as infrastructure, border security and military readiness, insisting that future international engagement must clearly serve US interests.

On X, the White House clarified that of the 66 organisations affected, 31 are UN entities while 35 fall outside the UN system.

“Today, President Donald J. Trump signed a Presidential Memorandum directing the withdrawal of the United States from 66 international organisations that no longer serve American interests including: 35-non UN organisations and 31 UN entities,” it stated.
