A 24-year-old man has been taken into custody following public outrage triggered by a viral video alleging sexual abuse, a development that has prompted renewed scrutiny of both criminal conduct and police professionalism in the handling of sensitive cases.
According to police authorities on Thursday, the arrest followed actionable intelligence provided by the victim’s family, who had earlier escalated the matter by drawing public attention to the alleged incident through social media, thereby accelerating official intervention.
In Imo State, the Police Command confirmed on Thursday that the suspect, identified as Wisdom Onyeaju from Umuekweye in Irete, Owerri West Local Government Area, is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department, where detectives are conducting a detailed investigation into the allegation.
Speaking on the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Okoye Henry, said the suspect would be charged to court immediately investigations are concluded.
“The Command has commenced a thorough investigation, and upon its conclusion, the suspect will be arraigned with the appropriate charges in line with the law,” he said.
Moreover, the police disclosed that officers accused of professional misconduct while initially handling the case have also been identified and detained.
Consequently, an orderly room trial has been scheduled to begin on Monday, January 12, 2026, to determine their culpability in accordance with existing police regulations.
Furthermore, the Command assured residents that the case would be pursued transparently, stressing that no individual, including police personnel, would be shielded from accountability.
“Our commitment to professionalism, transparency, and justice remains unwavering, and the public can be assured that this matter will be diligently prosecuted,” Okoye said.
