Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has declared that he remains firmly rooted in the Labour Party, distancing himself from recent political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking with a tone of resolve, the former vice-presidential candidate made it clear that his political future would not be shaped by defections or coalitions, but by what he described as a long-term commitment to rebuilding Nigeria.
Baba-Ahmed, who ran alongside Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential contest, acknowledged the shifting political landscape but insisted that personal conviction, rather than convenience, would guide his next steps.
He stressed that loyalty to a platform also means loyalty to the voters who believed in its ideals.
Addressing journalists at the Labour Party national secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday, the lawmaker dismissed speculation that he would follow Obi to the African Democratic Congress.
According to him, the decision to stay put was deliberate and carefully considered.
“I am staying with the Labour Party because this is where my political values align,” Baba-Ahmed said.
“Nigeria’s problems require consistency and sacrifice, not a rush from one platform to another.”
Moreover, he expressed scepticism about the emerging coalition around the ADC, arguing that it lacks ideological clarity.
He described several figures within the alliance as politicians driven more by frustration than by a shared vision for governance.
“The coalition does not inspire confidence,” he said.
“What I see are familiar faces recycling old ambitions without offering Nigerians anything fundamentally different.”
Looking ahead, Baba-Ahmed reiterated his willingness to play an active role in national leadership conversations as 2027 approaches.
Hence, he positioned himself as a steady figure within the opposition, promising to contribute ideas and energy toward what he called Nigeria’s long-overdue reset.
Furthermore, he urged Labour Party supporters to remain focused, noting that political endurance, not sudden movement, would determine the credibility of any alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
