Residents of a rural community in Niger State were left shaken after an unidentified missile was discovered in the bush, prompting swift police action.
Locals in the Zugurma area of Mashegu Local Government Area reportedly stumbled upon the device and immediately alerted authorities to prevent potential danger.
A source familiar with the incident told our correspondent that the missile is believed to be a Tomahawk warhead, possibly linked to munitions fired by the United States.
Confirming the report, Niger State Police spokesperson SP Wasiu Abiodun said, “On January 5th, around 2pm, locals reported sighting a suspicious object resembling a missile. Officers responded promptly.”
Police operatives from Ibbi Division quickly cordoned off the area, while the Command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal and CBRN unit conducted a detailed assessment and recovery operation.
“The item is currently under security investigation,” SP Abiodun added. “Any further developments will be communicated to the public in due course.”
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid approaching unknown objects, stressing that safety precautions are ongoing while investigations continue.
