Protest rocks Akure over appointment of acting Sports Council GM

Must read

The Ondo State Sports Complex witnessed a major disruption on Tuesday as sports stakeholders protested the appointment of Mrs Evelyn Lebi as Acting General Manager of the Ondo State Sports Council.

The protesters, composed of coaches, athletes, and union leaders, argued that Lebi’s selection would not foster the growth of sports in the state.

They demanded a more experienced and visionary leader for the council.

Coach Fisayo Bello, Coordinating Chairman of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), said sports in Ondo were in decline and needed urgent intervention.

“We need someone passionate about sports who can restore its former glory. Lebi contested four years ago, and we opposed her then. We remain convinced she is not the right choice. We want a technocrat who can move sports forward,” Bello stated.

Osifo Moses, AUPCTRE Vice Chairman and a boxing coach, emphasized the council required a proven professional to lead effectively and revitalize sporting activities across the state.

Joshua Ogunbiyi, Chairman of the Ondo State Professional Coaches Association, insisted the protest was not a criticism of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who he praised for supporting sports.

“Our concern is the leadership at the council. Lebi has sought this role several times, but we feel a new, competent figure is needed to revive sports,” Ogunbiyi said.

Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Henry Omoyofunmi, dismissed the protest as “unwarranted.”

He highlighted Lebi’s qualifications, noting her 15-year service in the Sports Council and current role as Director of Sports, and stated her appointment would strengthen, not hinder, the sector.
