Gunmen attack Kwara highway, kidnap travellers

Must read

Fresh security concerns have emerged in Kwara State following an early-morning assault on a major intercity road, where armed men abducted several commuters and briefly took control of traffic along the corridor.

According to information obtained by this publication, the attackers intercepted vehicles on the Isanlu–Isin–Omu Aran axis, overpowering travellers and forcing them into the surrounding bush.

At least four passengers were taken during the operation, which caused panic among motorists using the route.

Witnesses described a coordinated ambush that left drivers stranded and helpless. A local source familiar with the incident said the assailants acted without resistance, creating fear among road users.

“The attackers were confident and unchallenged. They stopped vehicles at will and picked their targets before disappearing,” the source said.

“Many travellers are now terrified of using that road, especially when heading toward Ilorin.”

The Isanlu–Isin–Omu Aran road serves as a vital link between several communities in Kwara South and the state capital.

Hence, repeated attacks along the axis have raised alarm over the safety of daily commuters and commercial drivers.

However, as of the time of filing this report, the Kwara State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement confirming the abduction or outlining rescue efforts for the victims.

Meanwhile, security analysts note that the latest incident fits into a broader pattern of worsening insecurity across the North-Central state.

In recent months, residents have reported a rise in violent attacks, particularly kidnappings targeting highways and public gatherings.

Furthermore, memories remain fresh of the November 18, 2025 attack on a Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, where gunmen killed three worshippers and abducted dozens during a midweek service.

Although the victims were later freed, the episode underscored the growing boldness of armed groups in the state.

As fear spreads, community leaders are urging authorities to intensify patrols and deploy additional security assets along vulnerable routes.

“Without visible action, these criminals will continue to operate freely,” a community elder said, calling for urgent intervention to restore confidence among travellers.
