Nigeria booked their place in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter-finals with a resounding 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16 on Monday, January 5, 2026, at the Complexe Sportif de Fès in Morocco.
The Super Eagles, three-time AFCON champions, delivered one of their most controlled performances of the tournament to date, dominating possession and creating numerous chances against a spirited but outclassed Mozambican side.
Nigeria opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Ademola Lookman converted a well-worked move, finishing clinically after linking with Akor Adams on the flank.
Five minutes later, captain Victor Osimhen doubled the lead, capitalising on sustained pressure and exploiting defensive gaps to slot home his side’s second.
The Super Eagles continued to press after the break and Osimhen struck again early in the second half, demonstrating his predatory instincts with another composed finish to put the tie beyond doubt.
Akor Adams rounded off the scoring in the 75th minute, drilling home from close range following a swift Nigerian counter-attack.
Head coach Eric Chelle’s men showcased tactical flexibility and attacking depth, with Lookman and Osimhen particularly influential throughout the match.
The win underscores Nigeria’s credentials as one of the tournament favourites, advancing with a blend of clinical finishing and cohesive team play.
Mozambique, making only their second appearance in the knockout phase of an AFCON, struggled to contain Nigeria’s pace and movement but nonetheless registered a historic campaign by reaching this stage.
Nigeria will now prepare to face either Algeria or DR Congo in the quarter-finals on January 10, 2026, seeking to build momentum en route to a first continental title since 2013.
