2026 will bring renewed hope, national stability – Akpabio

Must read

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has declared that 2026 will usher in renewed hope and steady progress for Nigeria, anchored on institutional responsibility and legislative diligence.

Akpabio, who spoke in his New Year message released through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, praised Nigerians for their resilience and civic maturity despite prevailing challenges.

The Senate President emphasised that the National Assembly would continue to discharge its constitutional duties of lawmaking, representation, and oversight to ensure governance reflects citizens’ aspirations.

He said, “The Senate and the entire National Assembly will continue to discharge their duties with diligence—providing legislative support where necessary, exercising oversight where required, and always acting in the best interest of national unity, economic stability, and social justice.”

While acknowledging ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity, economic pressures, infrastructure deficits, and youth unemployment, Akpabio expressed cautious optimism that visible results would emerge in the coming year.

He stressed that sustainable progress depended on strong institutions rather than individuals, adding, “Our democracy is strengthened when institutions function properly and leaders remain accountable.”

With political activities expected to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, the former Akwa Ibom State governor cautioned Nigerians against divisive politics and what he termed “false messianic narratives.”

“History has shown that those who present themselves as sole rescuers often deepen division rather than heal it. Democracy thrives on ideas, responsibility, and respect for national unity—not inflammatory rhetoric or deception,” Akpabio warned.

He urged political actors to exercise restraint and demonstrate national duty, assuring that the Senate would uphold democratic norms, parliamentary discipline, and the rule of law.

The Senate President reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to constructive engagement with the Executive, the Judiciary, and other stakeholders to build a united, just, and prosperous nation.

He called on Nigerians to remain engaged, vigilant, and supportive of democratic institutions while working collectively for peace, equity, and national progress.

Akpabio, on behalf of his family, constituents, the Senate, and the National Assembly, wished Nigerians peaceful celebrations and a prosperous 2026.
