Three persons are feared dead after a leisure outing at River Buruku in the Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State ended in tragedy.
The incident, which occurred on December 26, 2025, saw a group of revellers visit the river for a picnic, only for the excursion to take a fatal turn.
The victims were suspected to have drowned, prompting a rescue operation that led to the recovery of three bodies from the river the following day.
Reports circulating on social media indicated that emergency responders were swiftly deployed to the scene, with distressing images showing an ambulance, security personnel, and a large crowd gathered along the riverbank during the recovery exercise.
River Buruku, notorious for its fast-flowing currents, has recorded multiple drowning incidents over the years, particularly during festive periods when residents throng the area for recreation.
Despite persistent warnings from community leaders and safety officials, the river remains a popular destination for leisure seekers.
As of press time, families of the victims were anxiously awaiting official confirmation and further details on the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
Efforts to reach the Benue State Police Command and other relevant authorities for comment were unsuccessful.
