Authorities have opened the door to possible criminal charges against the driver conveying former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, following a fatal road crash that claimed the lives of two members of the boxer’s inner circle.
Investigations indicate that the driver, who sustained injuries in the incident, has now been discharged from medical care and formally questioned by law enforcement officials handling the case.
Police sources confirmed that statements obtained from the driver could form the basis for prosecution, particularly on allegations of reckless driving linked to the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Speaking on the development, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the matter had moved beyond medical concerns.
“The driver has recovered sufficiently and is cooperating with investigators. The facts established so far will guide the next legal steps,” he said.
Meanwhile, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) revealed that attention has also shifted to the truck involved in the collision, which remains parked near the Sagamu axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway for forensic examination.
Further findings by Ogun State’s Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) suggest that excessive speed played a critical role in the crash, contrary to early assumptions that it was purely mechanical failure.
According to TRACE officials, a burst tyre on the SUV led to a loss of control, but investigators believe the vehicle was travelling at a dangerously high speed before the incident.
“Over speeding significantly worsened the impact. It reduced the driver’s ability to regain control after the tyre burst,” a TRACE official explained.
In addition, FRSC officials disclosed that the truck driver involved in the crash allegedly fled the scene immediately after the impact and has since been declared wanted by authorities.
Joshua, who was injured in the accident, was rushed to Duchess International Hospital in Lagos, where he received treatment and was later confirmed to be in stable condition.
Tragically, two members of his team, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, died on the spot, a loss that sent shockwaves through the boxing community.
Confirming the deaths, Matchroom Boxing described the incident as devastating.
“This is a heartbreaking moment for everyone connected to Anthony Joshua.
“Two dedicated team members were lost suddenly and painfully,” the organisation said.
Matchroom chairman Eddie Hearn also paid tribute, describing the deceased as “exceptional individuals whose impact went far beyond the boxing ring,” while extending condolences to their families.
As investigations continue, authorities say accountability remains a priority, with both road safety violations and human actions under close scrutiny in what has become one of the most closely watched road accident cases in recent times.
