Eighteen passengers lost their lives in a devastating road accident in Jigawa State, underscoring renewed concerns over highway safety and vehicle maintenance across northern Nigeria.
The multiple-vehicle collision unfolded after a commercial bus transporting travellers suddenly became unstable while in motion, triggering a chain reaction that proved fatal for many occupants.
According to emergency officials, the bus reportedly suffered a tyre failure, causing the driver to lose control and veer into the path of an oncoming vehicle.
Within seconds, a heavy-duty truck ploughed into both vehicles, leaving extensive damage and trapping passengers.
The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that the crash occurred along the Dutse–Kwanar Babaldu highway on Tuesday, a route frequently used by commuters and commercial drivers.
Speaking on the incident, Jigawa FRSC Sector Commander, Umar Matazu, described the accident as swift and catastrophic.
“The impact was severe and unexpected. The sequence of events left victims with little or no opportunity to escape,” he said.
Matazu added that early assessments from the scene revealed a high casualty figure.
“Eighteen fatalities have been confirmed so far, including adults of both genders and children. It is a painful loss for families and the state,” he noted.
Meanwhile, rescue teams, supported by security agencies, arrived promptly to manage the scene.
Survivors with injuries were rushed to nearby medical facilities, while the deceased were evacuated to ease traffic congestion and allow investigations.
Furthermore, the road was temporarily cordoned off as officials worked to clear wreckage and restore movement along the busy corridor.
In response to the tragedy, the FRSC renewed its call for responsible driving practices. Matazu urged motorists to prioritise vehicle roadworthiness and observe speed regulations.
“Many of these crashes are preventable. Regular vehicle checks and disciplined driving can save lives,” he said.
The incident adds to growing statistics on fatal road crashes in Nigeria, highlighting the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and increased public awareness on road safety.
