Army foils waterway kidnapping, rescues eight travellers

Must read

The Nigerian Army has rescued eight civilians abducted along the Ikang–Cameroon waterways after a rapid response by troops deployed in Cross River’s coastal corridor.

Acting on community intelligence, soldiers attached to the 13 Brigade moved swiftly after reports indicated that armed men had intercepted a commercial boat and taken passengers hostage on the busy maritime route.

Security sources disclosed that the victims included six adults and two minors.

Moreover, troops immediately activated pursuit measures, sealed off escape channels, and established dominance across the waterways to frustrate the kidnappers’ movements.

The pressure proved decisive. Consequently, the assailants reportedly abandoned the captives at the Ini-Abasi Fishing Port and escaped into surrounding creeks toward the open sea.

All eight civilians were recovered alive and transported to a secure military facility for documentation and safety checks.

Importantly, no injuries or casualties were recorded during the operation.

Speaking on the development, the Commander of 13 Brigade, Brigadier General Peter Alimikhena, said the outcome reflected disciplined coordination and timely intelligence.

“Our troops responded with speed and precision, and that made the difference,” he said.

He further praised residents of the area for alerting security forces promptly, noting that local cooperation remains critical to disrupting criminal networks operating along inland waterways.

Meanwhile, the Army confirmed that patrols have been intensified in the Ikang maritime corridor to prevent the fleeing suspects from regrouping.

According to military officials, sustained surveillance will continue to deny criminal elements freedom of action.

Residents were again urged to provide credible and timely information, as security agencies intensify efforts to keep coastal communities safe.
