FG confirms US deadly airstrikes on terrorists groups in Northwest

Must read

The Federal Government has formally acknowledged that recent airstrikes targeting terrorist enclaves in Nigeria’s North West were carried out within the framework of structured security and intelligence cooperation with international partners, including the United States.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said the strikes were the outcome of sustained intelligence collaboration and strategic coordination aimed at countering terrorism and violent extremism across the country.

The ministry clarified that such engagements remain consistent with international law and respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Moreover, the government explained that the cooperation involves intelligence sharing and operational support designed to neutralise terrorist threats while aligning with globally accepted counterterrorism standards.

It stressed that all joint actions are undertaken through established bilateral understandings and diplomatic channels.

The ministry further underscored that the protection of civilians remains central to Nigeria’s counterterrorism strategy.

It said the government continues to prioritise the safety, rights, and dignity of all citizens, regardless of religious or ethnic affiliation, in the conduct of security operations.

According to the statement, acts of terrorism, whether directed at Christian, Muslim, or other communities, represent a direct assault on Nigeria’s core values and a threat to international peace and security.

Hence, the government maintained that its response to extremism is driven by national unity rather than sectarian considerations.

Furthermore, the Foreign Affairs Ministry noted that Nigeria is intensifying efforts to dismantle terrorist networks by disrupting their funding channels, logistics, and cross-border movements.

These measures, it added, are being complemented by ongoing initiatives to strengthen domestic intelligence and security institutions.

The ministry said the Federal Government will continue to engage its international partners while keeping Nigerians informed through official communication channels as counterterrorism operations evolve.

The statement was signed by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, and dated December 26, 2025.
