Gov Abiodun pledges peaceful power handover, reflects on Christmas values

Must read

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has assured residents that his administration will deliver a smooth, peaceful and rancour-free transition of power at the end of his second term in 2027, describing the plan as a deliberate effort to set a new standard in the state’s political history.

The governor gave the assurance on Thursday during a Christmas church service at St. James’ Anglican Church, Iperu-Remo, in Ikenne Local Government Area.

According to him, the objective is to ensure that governance in Ogun State concludes on a note of stability, unity and institutional maturity.

Speaking on the transition, Abiodun said his administration was committed to finishing strong and handing over to a successor without acrimony, an outcome he described as unprecedented in the state’s five decades of existence.

He noted that peaceful succession was a critical indicator of democratic growth and responsible leadership.

Furthermore, the governor attributed his confidence to what he described as measurable progress recorded across key sectors since he assumed office.

He said Ogun State’s economic base had expanded significantly, driven by deliberate policies that attracted investments and stimulated industrial growth.

Providing figures to support his claim, Abiodun disclosed that the state’s annual budget had grown from about ₦355 billion at the start of his administration to more than ₦2.7 trillion.

According to him, the increase reflects rising economic activities, expanding internally generated revenue and growing investor confidence in the state.

He added that the administration had reconstructed over 2,000 schools, empowered farmers, created jobs and widened economic opportunities across communities.

The governor stressed that these interventions were ongoing, noting that sustained public support and prayers remained essential to consolidating the gains.

Beyond economic performance, Abiodun reaffirmed his resolve to use public office in service to God and the people.

He cited major infrastructure projects, including the Gateway International Airport and road developments across the three senatorial districts, as enduring legacies aimed at long-term growth.

In addition, the governor commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, describing the Renewed Hope Agenda as a stabilising framework for the nation.

He said improvements in fuel availability, easing inflationary pressures and a more stable foreign exchange environment were signs of gradual national recovery.

Turning to the significance of Christmas, Abiodun urged residents to embrace the season’s deeper values rather than focusing solely on celebration.

He stressed that love, peace, compassion and generosity toward the less privileged defined the true meaning of Christmas.

He further encouraged citizens to live Christ-like lives through moderation, responsible conduct and care for one another, while cautioning against excesses, particularly during the festive period.

Earlier in his sermon titled “Christmas Is God’s Best Gift to You,” the Vicar of the church, Venerable Tolulope Akinwande, described Christmas as a reminder of God’s selfless love to humanity through the birth of Jesus Christ.

Drawing from biblical passages, he explained that the purpose of Christ’s coming is fulfilled when individuals accept the gift and live transformed lives.

The cleric also praised Governor Abiodun’s leadership, describing it as purposeful and impactful, and prayed that the final phase of his tenure would surpass its beginning in achievements and legacy.
