A wave of grief and concern has followed reports that a young National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member was allegedly kidnapped and killed while travelling back to his home community in Adamawa State after completing his mandatory service year.
The victim, who reportedly served in Katsina State, was said to be on his way to his village in Lamurde Local Government Area when the incident occurred, triggering widespread reactions on social media and prompting urgent security attention.
Following the online reports, the Adamawa State Police Command confirmed that it had launched a discreet but thorough investigation to establish the true circumstances surrounding the alleged killing.
Police spokesperson, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, said the Commissioner of Police, Dankombo Morris, immediately ordered a field response upon learning of the development.
According to him, tactical operatives, alongside crime scene investigators, were deployed to Lamurde to conduct an on-the-spot assessment and quietly gather facts.
“The command is not relying on speculation or online narratives,” Nguroje said.
“Our officers have been sent to verify what happened and determine whether a crime was committed.”
He further noted that the police were still working to confirm the identity of the corps member and the sequence of events that led to his reported death.
Moreover, the command cautioned the public against circulating unverified claims, stressing that premature conclusions could undermine ongoing investigations.
“We understand the emotions involved, especially when it concerns a corps member who had just completed national service,” the police spokesperson said.
“However, the public must allow the investigation to run its course.”
Residents and potential witnesses were urged to volunteer any information that could assist investigators, with assurances that such cooperation would be treated confidentially.
The police reiterated their commitment to transparency and public safety, adding that updates would be provided as soon as concrete findings emerge from the investigation.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of young Nigerians travelling across states, particularly corps members returning home after service.
