NBA raises alarm over tax reform acts, seeks suspension

Must read

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has raised fresh concerns over the credibility of Nigeria’s legislative process following controversies surrounding the newly enacted Tax Reform Acts.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the association warned that the circumstances under which the tax laws were passed could weaken constitutional governance and diminish public trust in the National Assembly.

Speaking on behalf of the NBA, its President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, said the unfolding issues go beyond tax policy and touch on the integrity of lawmaking in the country.

He noted that transparency and due process must remain central to legislative actions in a democratic system.

According to Osigwe, the association is calling for a thorough and transparent probe into how the Tax Reform Acts emerged, stressing that clarity is necessary to rebuild confidence among citizens and stakeholders.

He said an open investigation would help address lingering doubts and reinforce accountability within the legislature.

Moreover, the NBA urged relevant authorities to halt the implementation of the tax laws until all concerns are properly examined.

Osigwe explained that proceeding with enforcement amid controversy could deepen uncertainty and legal disputes.

“The credibility of any law depends on the integrity of the process that produced it,” he said.

“Without full clarity, the public is left questioning not just these tax reforms, but the broader legislative framework.”

Furthermore, the association warned that unresolved legal ambiguities could negatively affect Nigeria’s economic environment.

It noted that businesses and investors rely on predictable and stable laws to make informed decisions.

The NBA added that uncertainty around the Tax Reform Acts could discourage investment, disrupt commercial planning, and create compliance challenges for individuals and corporate entities.

Hence, it argued that such instability is inconsistent with the principles of the rule of law.

Ultimately, the association maintained that restoring confidence in the legislative process is essential for economic stability and democratic governance, urging swift action to address the controversy surrounding the Tax Reform Acts.
