Jigawa council approves monthly salary for former political appointees

Must read

A new welfare initiative has emerged in Kirikasamma Local Government Area of Jigawa State, as the council moves to formally support former political office holders through structured monthly allowances aimed at deepening cooperation in local governance.

Council Chairman, Maji Wakili Marma, disclosed the policy during a stakeholders’ engagement at the local government headquarters, explaining that the move recognises past service while strengthening institutional memory and continuity.

Under the arrangement, former council chairmen are to receive ₦50,000 monthly, while ex-vice chairmen will earn ₦40,000. Past council secretaries are allocated ₦30,000, and former councillors will collect ₦25,000 each.

Marma noted that the payments would be consistent and sustained, stressing that the administration deliberately designed the programme to avoid irregular disbursement or abrupt suspension.

According to the chairman, nearly 100 former political appointees across different tenures are expected to benefit, describing the scheme as a modest but meaningful appreciation of their sacrifices and contributions.

“Our former leaders played critical roles in shaping this council, and it is only right to acknowledge that legacy in a practical way,” Marma said, adding that their experience remains a valuable asset to the local government.

He further explained that the initiative is also intended to promote unity within the community, urging beneficiaries to continue offering guidance and constructive input to the current administration.

Marma expressed confidence that sustained engagement with past office holders would improve decision-making at the grassroots and accelerate development outcomes across the local government.

He disclosed that payment of the allowances would commence within the month, while beneficiaries would also be encouraged to submit feedback and recommendations to help refine the programme over time.

Details of the initiative were unveiled during a special meeting that brought together former council leaders alongside serving officials at the Kirikasamma Local Government headquarters.
